October 28, 2021 - Belgium is well-known as a cycling hotbed beyond its racing pedigree, and the province of Limburg, in the eastern part of the Flanders region, has taken that passion one step further.
With more than 30 scenic routes to choose from, the region’s networks have much to offer. Take advantage of bike rentals (including e-bikes), activities, beer sampling excursions, road and mountain biking trails, professional guides, a wide array of accommodations and eateries, plus cycling-friendly cafés and more. Check out these two stand-out cycling excursions for the e-adventurer in you.
Back in April 2016, the small town of Bokrijk near Hasselt created a unique 3-metre wide, 650-metre long pathway that runs through the ponds of De Wijers.
At its deepest section, you’re at eye-level with the water on both sides. You can actually touch the water on either side of the path as you ride by, creating an amazing sensation and experience.
A short 22km north in the Bosland forest in Hechtel-Eksel, the largest forested area in Flanders, the locals have created an amazing 700-metre circular pathway that runs through a dense forest canopy and winds up, topping out at a height of 10 metres above ground.
Opened in June 2019, the pathway is supported by strategically placed steel pillars designed to resemble the straight trunks of the local native fir trees. The pathway is part of a tailor-made woodland management program designed to create healthy and balanced forest resources.
Part of a network of cycle routes spanning the scenic De Wijers region of the country, the area encourages riders to connect with nature, quite literally.
