October 28, 2021 - The East Coast Greenway (ECG) is an amazing 3,000-mile bikeway and walkway stretching from Calais, Maine (near the Canadian border) to Key West, Florida.
Conceived back in 1991, the route connects 15 states and 450 communities including major cities such as New York, Boston and Miami Approximately 35% of the Greenway, or over 1,000 miles, is entirely protected, and another 1,000 miles make up complementary routes.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many sections of the Greenway saw huge ridership increases. With over 50 million visits in 2020 alone, overall usage grew by 50%, while numbers tripled in some locations.
The East Coast Greenway is truly a remarkable achievement, while being versatile and dynamic, as people can take advantage of it in so many different ways: commute to work, take a weekend family outing, earn bragging rights by riding a whole state, or take a journey of a lifetime entirely by bike.
Years of collaboration and alliances with volunteers and officials in states, cities and local communities at regional and national levels helped realize the vision for this amazing route that extends the length of the Eastern Seaboard. Managed by the East Coast Greenway Alliance (ECGA), safety is key to ensure people feel secure and welcome on the trail.
The ECG welcomes Class 1 e-bikes to their second annual New York City to Philadelphia Greenway Ride next May 14-15, with a recommended speed limit of 15 mph. The ECGA notes that all e-bikes need to follow all local and state guidelines as well.
According to the Alliance, about 25 million people live within five miles of the East Coast Greenway; since its founding, more than $1 billion has been invested in the route. The ECGA has staff and volunteers in each of the states involved in the Greenway.
The most visited Greenway in the USA, you can track your route on the ECG’s interactive map. For more information, please visit here.
