October 12, 2020 - The Erie Canalway Trail follows one of the world’s most famous man-made waterways for almost 580km across Upstate New York for a unique heritage getaway.
Connecting Albany and Buffalo, the renowned trail is now open to Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes as part of a pilot project, but some local restrictions may apply.
Mostly flat and made of stone, dust and gravel, with a few paved and on- road sections, you can experience the trail as part of one multi-day adventure, or explore shorter segments with one of the trail’s region-by-region itineraries.
There is also a fully supported annual bike tour that runs eastward for eight days, starting in Buffalo. If you plan to cycle the entire length of the trail, either as part of the tour or on your own, you can register to be a part of the End-to-End program.
Participants receive a certificate and a window decal and are added to the Honor Roll to celebrate their achievement of walking or cycling end- to-end.
The trail offers easy access to communities along the way, with plenty to see and do. You can stop in Albion to visit farmers’ markets, explore Brockport’s pedestrian- friendly downtown, take in High Falls in Rochester or visit the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse. Accommodation options along the way include campsites, hotels, motels and bed & breakfasts.
You’ll also find a series of recommended family-friendly trips along the Canalway with round-trip routes that range from 3km to 22.5km, with fun themes like the ice cream ride and bridge ride.
