Edmonton Launches Bike Valet Parking Pilot Project to Draw More People to Downtown

August 8, 2023 - (Edmonton, AB) A new free bike parking service is the City of Edmonton’s latest initiative to draw more residents downtown reports CBC. The pilot project will run throughout August, and at least part of September, in conjunction with Bike Edmonton, a local non-profit cycling advocacy group.

The program is funded by the city’s Meet Me Downtown grant, which aims to increase the number of people visiting downtown since the pandemic-related restrictions lifted in 2022. Bike Edmonton’s volunteers are on hand to make sure bicycles are tagged and locked securely.

The group’s executive director, Greg Glatz, said some people are hesitant to cycle downtown because they’re worried about their bike getting stolen and Bike Edmonton wants to help to ease people’s minds.

In addition, increased crime and social disorder issues in the downtown area have seen overnight security teams aim to bring order to Edmonton’s downtown.
