eNews – San Francisco’s eBike Food Delivery Awarded $600,000 of New Funding

May 9, 2024 - San Francisco Mayor, London N. Breed, and the San Francisco Environment (SFE) Department announced in early December that the city had been awarded a $600,000 federal grant from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to expand their E-Bike Delivery Pilot program. The funding will more than double the number of participants in the city’s green food delivery initiative.

The expansion builds on a $2.4 million clean transportation grant the City received in 2022 from the California Energy Commission (CEC) that supported the launch of the program for up to 30 participants. This includes new e-bike food-delivery participants, safety trainings, and robust data collection to showcase the overall and environmental benefits of utilizing e-bikes for deliveries rather than fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

Over 40% of San Francisco’s carbon emissions come from fossil fuel vehicle operations. As a transit- first city with a goal of achieving 80% of trips through low-carbon modes of transportation, cleaner alternatives that include biking, walking, and mass transit are essential strategies.
