FedEx is Hiring Bike Messengers for First Official North American eCargo Bike Fleet

release by Curbside Cycle

September 22, 2021 - FedEx has committed to greening their delivery fleet and is the first worldwide courier company to invest in a North American cargo bike fleet. The cool thing about this story is that FedEx didn’t launch in New York or Los Angeles, but right here in Canada. The concept is something that has worked well in Europe but up to now has seemed impossible in North America.

FedEx worked closely with Canada’s Pembina Institute that identified rising freight traffic to be the single greatest culprit when it comes to CO2 emissions from vehicular traffic.

FedEx then worked with Curbside Cycle and Pembina to launch a Toronto pilot of Bullitt e-cargo bikes. This pilot has been enormously successful, with a single e-cargo bike making more drops per hour than a truck!

Now FedEx is launching a fleet across Canada, totalling 50 e-cargo bikes! You’ll find them in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. But to make this program work, FedEx needs riders.

As former bike messengers ourselves, we’re happy that FedEx is bringing a living wage, a benefits package, and more dignity to cycling and the bicycle messenger’s job.

We hope this program is a success and the cycling community will show support for this amazing initiative and link to FedEx’s career page here.
