French Government to Spend 250 Million Euros to Boost Everyday Cycling as Part of Plan Vélo

September 22, 2022 - France has announced 250 million euros to promote every day cycling in 2023 as part of its Plan Vélo initiative launched in 2018 to make France a “great cycling nation,” reports Forbes and Reuters.

At a press conference current Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne said the new bicycle plan includes “teaching our youth how to move around on bikes” and she hopes the program will reach 800,000 school children.

In 2021 a total of 2.7 million bikes were sold making cycling the most-sold means of transport that year. Sales were boosted by new bike lanes and cycling infrastructure along with incentives to buy and fix bicycles.

The French Federation of Bike Users (FUB) suggested that $2.4 billion Euros would be needed for the country to meet its objectives for cycle use in addition to its climate change goals.
