Hyena Releases E-Road AIR Its Lightest eDrive System Weighing Only 3.2 kg

release by Hyena E-Bike Systems

March 17, 2023 - (Taichung, Taiwan) Hyena, the e-bike system manufacturer from Taiwan, has just released their lightest drive system, the E-Road AIR, by adding a small lightweight rear drive to subdivide its product category.

Ultra lightweight with proper support
The motor of E-Road AIR is less than 1.4 kg, with a tiny outer diameter of 112 mm, which means it can be hidden behind any cassettes. It features the best torque to weight ratio on the market, providing 30 Nm of torque on the hub axle. The freehub body follows the SHIMANO HG 11 standard and is compatible with up to a 12-speed cassette.

Torque sensor-based PAS
The E-Road AIR drive system features a high-resolution torque sensor to accurately measure the cyclist’s pedaling behavior. The ISIS-type BB spindle is available for a more premium cranksets selection. The rider’s pedaling torque and cadence signals are timely processed through Hyena’s advanced bionic algorithm, amplifying the rider’s effort while providing a great natural riding sensation.

Battery and drive unit improvements
The control and drive unit hidden in the 250 Wh ultra-slim battery has a significant upgrade. E-Road AIR system can power bicycle lights up to 12V 24W, and can connect with and power the electronic gear-shifting system. An optional 180Wh range extender can be connected to the battery, adding up to 40 km of range.

Intuitive interface and ergonomic control
E-Road AIR’s frame-embedded LED display can be integrated into the top tube or in the stem, and the most important information – battery power and assist level – is easily visible at a glance. A remote control with two buttons can be attached to the dropbar or flatbar for riders to switch the assist level without removing their hands from the handlebar or brake lever. For bicycle models with electronic gear-shifting, an additional set of buttons can also be added for e-shift operation.

Smart bicycle parts integration
The new system can work with selected third-party electronic gear-shifting, allowing users to manage these systems through Hyena’s applications. This third-party bicycle electronics cooperation platform is called ‘HyenaSync.’ The company plans to integrate more smart parts that can be directly powered by Hyena drive systems and operated through its software in the near future.

Digital connectivity
In recent years, Hyena has gained recognition in the mid-level market for its premium hub drive systems, which offer an exceptional riding experience and powerful software functions. Hyena system-powered e-bikes can be diagnosed and updated over the air anytime through its dealer service application and consumer-facing smartphone app with an attractive UI/UX design, significantly enhancing after-sales service – the most discussed and concerned topic today.

The lightest e-bike on the Taipei Cycle
At the Taipei Cycle Show 2023, in addition to the E-Road AIR drive system unit, Hyena will also showcase a prototype e-road bike that had this system installed, the entire bike weighing just around 10 kg. Although the manufacturer of this prototype is yet to be determined, we expect to be able to experience and test a similar bike with this new system on the market soon.
