July 7, 2021 - Cycling and walking are becoming a bigger part of people’s daily routine in Ireland reports the Irish Times. The rapid lifestyle modal shift due to the pandemic has been supported by the government’s commitment of €1.8 billion to walking and cycling infrastructure from 2020 to 2025.
The funding is a huge increase over recent years, and a study of over 250,000 people by the University of Glasgow found that cycling to work nearly halved the risk of developing heart disease and cancer, and also lowered the risk of premature death from any cause by more than 40 per cent.
Cyclists are now able to enjoy coastal cyclepaths along with improved air quality, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, as well as reduced noise levels.
