April 26, 2024 - The City of Minneapolis has formally selected Oonee, based in New York, as the operator of the city’s new comprehensive secure cycling parking a charging system reports Medium. By adopting this model, Minneapolis, with a population of 425,000, will become the second city in the nation to adopt a municipal plan for these critical services, after Jersey City, and the largest city in North America to implement this vision.
Oonee hopes that, “…this system will eventually grow to such a point so as to ensure that every resident has access to public parking and charging facilities at both end and beginning of the trip.”
Founded in 2017 by Shabazz Stuart and Manuel Mansylla, Oonee’s system was launched in Jersey City in January 2024 and has been in process of reaching out to a number of cities in North America to explore ways to bring Oonee to their streets.
According to Oonee, “Not only would such a system help make urban transportation more manageable by making micromobility more viable within the urban context (lack of secure parking is the second leading barrier to adoption) but these systems would also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase economic mobility among minorities and immigrants.”
