Montreal’s Cycling Culture Seen as Model for Rest of Canada as Gas Prices Spike

June 5, 2022 - As gas prices rise the rest of Canada can learn from Montreal, a cycling leader in North America, due to the city’s focus on building a contiguous network of protected bike lanes reports The Canadian Press in CP24.

Look to Montreal’s cycling culture for lessons on how to boost cycling culture says Stein van Oosteren, spokesperson for a Paris-based cycling association. “The time is right for Canadian cities to make big gains in changing the way people move around.”

Réseau express vélo that began in 2020 is a great example of how to build ridership as safer infrastructure will attract more women, older people and children says Owen Waygood, a professor of transportation engineering at Polytechnique Montréal. “Montreal does have some great leadership in that respect,” he added.
