Mulo eCargo Bike Self-service Rental System Pilot Project Launches in Montreal

June 2, 2025 - (Montreal, Que.) A new e-cargo bike self-service rental system called Mulo has launched a pilot project in Montreal with six Black Iron Horse units accessible in the borough of Rosemont – La Petite-Patrie reports La Journal de Montreal.

The Mulo e-cargo bike share system is associated with coffee shop outlets in Montreal’s Rosemont district: Café des Habitudes, Café Les Oubliettes, Noble Café (in the Mile Ex, on rue Alexandra), Café Larue and Fils (on Castelnau) and the Épizode grocery store. This allows the removal and recharging of the batteries overnight, while users can also enjoy a coffee after their ride.

To use the service you must download the app and create an account. Fees are charged in 30-minute intervals: $5 for the first half hour and then $4 per additional 30 minutes. If you wish to take a break you can pause the e-cargo bike at a cost of $1 per 15 min. There’s also a security deposit of $100 per cargo bike that can hold up to 110 kilos in the front box.

The brainchild of three Montreal residents it’s the first system of its kind in Quebec. CargoB launched the USA’s first e-cargo bike share system in Boston last year. Toronto’s Happy Fiets Canada was established in May 2021 but stopped operations in 2024. Ride Zygg, with outlets in Toronto and Vancouver, offers a subscription/rental service for e-bikes and e-cargo bikes. Let’s Go Cargo became Ottawa’s first e-cargo bike rental company in 2023 and recently celebrated their second anniversary.

The Mulo pilot project will run from June to October.
