March 14, 2023 - (San Diego, CA) myStromer AG looks back with satisfaction at financial year 2022, a complex time for the bike industry. Despite major challenges in procurement and growing numbers of employees working from home, Stromer was able to see a 17% increase in sales globally in 2022.
For 2023, certain role changes were planned within the company and these are intended to maintain myStromer AG as the market leader in the S-Pedelec segment and continue on its path to success.
In Benelux in particular, myStromer AG’s market share remains in the pole position – Belgium: 37% with a gain of 3% compared to the previous year; the Netherlands: 49.7% with a gain of 11%. Even though difficulties in the supply chain and exchange rate issues meant this was not an easy year for the e-bike segment, the company’s market position in Switzerland was maintained and double-digit growth was even achieved in the German market.
Growth and Market Shares in 2022
Highlighting myStromer AG’s impressive 17% global sales growth for 2022, was its best-selling model, the ST3 with Pinion gearbox, and the new high-end flagship ST7, the world’s first S-Pedelec with electronic Pinion SmartShift. The novel Pinion gear shift system, and carbon belt drive, set new standards in terms of range and power.
The delivery performance of the Stromer group also improved significantly thanks to the considerable increase of staff at the EU service center in ‘s Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. Last year the brand Desiknio (e-bikes up to 25 km/h) also joined the Stromer group portfolio. The introduction of this premium e-bike manufacturer to the market was extremely successful thanks to the expansion of its dealer network.
“The year 2022, with 17 % growth, shows that we are on the right path with Stromer and our range of products. In my opinion, the topic of mobility is still in its nascent stages in Europe and North America and will continue to add a lot of growth to the entire sector. We are seeing this positive trend thanks to our Stromer customers as well, who rode an additional 30 million kilometers last year compared to the COVID year. In total, 99 million kilometers were traveled on Stromer S-Pedelecs in 2022,” summarized Co-CEO Tomi Viiala.
Outlook for 2023
For 2023, the goal is once again to see double-digit growth, and an overall positive development on the S-Pedelec market is expected. Staff expansion is planned in this regard, with a strategic focus on the topics of retailer support and sales. Thanks to the uncommonly high growth of the e-bike segment in the USA, for example, a completely new sales team was established there.
New personnel developments at Stromer North America
After Tomi Viiala was tasked not only with his co-CEO duties but also with the management of global sales, in 2023 he will be fully and completely concentrating on his role as CEO in tandem with Karl Ludwig Kley.
In North America, Stromer proudly welcomes a new general manager along with sales, and marketing staff to its team. Matti Rajakyla, former Finnish Olympic swimmer, brings his experience consulting in sports tech as General Manager, overseeing Ryan Hiscoe and Steve Kwait, who have joined as Sales Director and Western Regional Manager respectively.
“I am proud to be part of a company whose products are truly superb, and I am thrilled to share our new offerings with the North American market in 2023 and beyond,” says Rajakyla, who brings half a decade of brand and staff consulting experience to the new role. During his Olympic career, Rajakyla competed at both the Athens and Beijing Games. Now he is eager to grow the Stromer brand in North America and is dedicated to supporting Stromer’s retail and service partners across the US and Canada.
Hiscoe, whose career spans over 15 years in the bike industry and includes tenures at Cannondale and Kask, has been pivotal in adding new locations to the retail network since his onboarding. Steve Kwait brings nearly 30 years of sports industry experience to his new role as Western Regional Manager.
Together they join Gianluca Douros, Stromer’s North American Marketing Director, and JD Howell, Inside Sales Manager, to complete a newly revamped Sales and Marketing team for Stromer North America.
