NABSA 5th Annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report – 10% Increase in Trips

release by NABSA

August 6, 2024 - NABSA’s fifth annual Shared Micromobility State of the Industry Report continues to demonstrate the strength, evolution, and benefits of shared micromobility in communities across North America, and confirms shared micromobility as an essential part of multi-modal mobility strategies that are necessary to get people where they need to go now and into the future.

With fifteen years since inception and constant evolution, 2023 saw a new stage of maturity for the industry, with record highs for trip-making and the number of cities with shared micromobility systems. This report tracks the trends, growth, and success of shared micromobility and presents new research demonstrating the impact of the industry across North America.

Some exciting findings from the 2023 State of the Industry Report include:

  • At least 172 million shared micromobility trips were taken across North America in 2023, an all time high and a 10% increase from 2022.
  • In 2023 there were shared micromobility 280,000 vehicles in operation.
  • In 2023, 82% of shared micromobility systems included e-devices and 64% of shared micromobility trips were taken on e-devices. The number of systems with e-bikes grew 27% since 2022, and the number of systems with e-scooters remained relatively consistent.
  • By replacing short car trips and making new trips with shared micromobility, riders gained an additional 24 million hours of physical activity.
  • Shared micromobility offset approximately 81 million pounds (37 million kg) of CO₂ emissions by replacing auto trips. Since 2019, shared micromobility trips have offset 303 million lbs of CO₂ emissions (137 million kg).
  • Shared micromobility helped more people to access transit, with 70% of riders stating that they use shared micromobility to connect to transit and 20% of all shared micromobility were to connect to transit.
