September 11, 2025 - Edmonton’s new “bike bus” kicked off on Sept. 9 amidst excitement and smiles as young bikers kicked off their first-ever ride commute on two wheels to Rutherford School reports CTV News and Taproot Edmonton.

Organizer Kellen Westman has been getting around by bike for more than two decades and heard about the “bike bus” concept two years ago, and waited until one of his kids was school-aged so he could set up his own bike bus.
“I just want to spread (active transportation) to everybody, and I’ve been doing that throughout my whole life, and I’m finding this is a really good tool to do that,” Westman told Taproot Edmonton. “Starting with kids is the most significant way to make any change, lasting generational changes.”
The innovative concept began with Barcelona’s Bici Bus and is volunteer-led including both school-aged children and their parents to create “joyful, social and safe spaces.”
“We’re big, we’re loud, we’re visible, we move together,” said Westman in the CTV report. Although the bike bus only organizes once a week right now, Westman said the hope is to get kids organized in different schools every day so long as weather and safety permits.
