April 26, 2024 - In a new study, researchers from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland found that over 50% of e-bike owners use their cars less and almost 20% get rid of their car, or don’t plan on buying one.
A whopping 78.7% used their e-bike for commuting while a majority use their e-bikes for transport and leisure, and over 60% take public transport less. Less than 10% said they used their e-bikes for recreational purposes only.
Published in Taylor and Francis Online in Applied Mobilities researchers concluded that, “… e-bikes are used very frequently and for a variety of reasons but with a predominance of utility trips. They are contributing to the growth of cycling in Lausanne, as measured both by an increase in the modal share of cycling and by an increase in cycling traffic. E-bikes compete with all the other modes and induce a multidimensional modal shift. Also e-cycling may replace, prolong, or increase cycling.”
