Ontario recently changed the Highway Traffic Act to evaluate the use of power-assisted cargo bikes and introduced a new 5-year pilot program for municipalities to enact a by-law permitting e-cargo bikes.

The new by-law and pilot will allow the use of e-cargo bikes as an active transportation option for residents and a sustainable alternative to delivery trucks for businesses. Licensed e-rickshaws will also be allowed to transport residents and visitors.

The Transportation Committee will review the pilot results in 2024. For more information on Ottawa’s programs and services, visit ottawa.ca.
