Paris Launches Emergency Medical eCargo Bikes for Urgent Deliveries

October 6, 2020 - A new fleet of electrically assisted bicycles, “Emergency bikes”, has just been launched, in collaboration with the Emergency Medical Services of Paris. Blue and white cargo bikes have appeared in the capital. Several “Emergency bikes” are in the experimental phase in Paris.

Created by Ecox, a network specializing in electrically assisted bicycles, in collaboration with the Emergency Medical Services of Paris, they were born with one objective: to be able to offer emergency physicians a safe and fast means of transport, even when the city is congested.

A tailor-made electrically assisted cargo bike was therefore invented. Medical storage, isothermal box, long-range blue LED light, reinforced tires, range of 160 km, medical safety markings on the wheels… The vehicle has been designed for the many trips of emergency doctors in town.

In Paris, for example, medical emergencies receive between 300 and 400 telephone calls per day, which translates into approximately 250 visits. “The objective of traveling by bicycle is to gain in availability of mind for the patient, both in time and in listening quality,” explains Dr Michel Desmaizières, emergency doctor in the capital.

With this bike, I spend an hour less in transport per day, and I can park where I want: this represents a real time saving” , explains Dr. Martin Méalet, doctor who takes part in the experiment.

If this is conclusive, it could then be extended to other cities in France. With the idea of eventually being able to offer this service to nurses or even medical transporters, private ambulance drivers, etc.
