People For Bikes Urges U.S. Industry to Oppose New Tariffs on Bicycles and eBikes by Oct. 21

October 14, 2025 - On October 7, 2025, the U.S. Commerce Department published 95 new requests for inclusion of derivative products in Section 232 aluminum and steel tariffs.

New tariffs on bicycles and e-bikes may be coming in the US unless opposition to them is successful. ©

Both Guardian Bikes, that manufactures and assembles juvenile bikes in Seymour, Indiana, and sells them directly to consumers, and the Aluminum Extruders Council, have requested to include bicycles, frames, and electric bicycles, potentially subjecting them to a 50% tariff.

The public comment period closes October 21. PeopleForBikes will be submitting comments in opposition to these two requests and encourages industry allies to do the same.

The organization has created a template letter to prepare and submit a comment letter to the Commerce Department, and has also created talking points to state opposition to the requests for inclusion.

If these two inclusion requests are granted, all bicycles and frames imported into the US from any country would be subject to a 50% tariff on both their steel and aluminum content.
