Philadelphia Bans Motor Vehicles from Stopping in Bike Lanes – Big Win for Cycling Advocates

December 22, 2024 - (Philadelphia, PA) It is now illegal to stop in bike lanes in Philadelphia following a new law signed by Mayor Cherelle L. Parker on Dec. 4 marking a big political victory for cycling and traffic safety advocates reports The Philadelphia Inquirer and other outlets.

It’s already forbidden to park in bike lanes, but the new ordinance makes it illegal for a driver to pull a vehicle over and stop temporarily in a bike lane to load or unload.

A series of high-profile crashes that killed cyclists and pedestrians last summer led to a campaign for more protections by cycling and safety groups. City Council passed the measure unanimously on Oct. 24 and violators could be fined $125.
