Portugal Leads Bicycle Producers in Europe as eBike Exports Break Records

September 17, 2021 - Portugal, the leading country in the European Union for bicycle production, is reporting record e-bike export sales as well according to Abimota, the country’s National Association for Two Wheel Industries.

A substantial increase of 137% with a total of 85 million Euros was recorded in July 2021, yet Abimota’s figures indicate monthly exports growth over 100% since January of this year, with July being the best so far. This upward trend mirrors growth in bicycle component sales as well since 2015.

Portugal topped the list of bicycle producers in the European Union in 2019 with a total of 2.6 million units with Italy in second at 2.1 million and Germany third at 1.3 million units. Portugal continues to lead in 2020 with almost a quarter of the market share totaling more than 424 million Euros, an increase of 5% compared to 2019.

“The national bicycle industry is going through its best moments and registers increases on all fronts to respond to the increase in demand for electric two-wheel vehicles in the national and international markets,” according to a statement by Abimota.
