Record Numbers of Women are Cycling in New York City as Safety Levels Increase

October 10, 2020 - When the pandemic hit draining city streets of traffic, cycling suddenly seemed like a safer way to get around. As the bicycle craze swept the globe women have turned out in record numbers in New York City and other cities reports Christina Goldbaum in the New York Times.

There were an estimated 80% more cycling trips in July compared with the same month last year, with biking by women rising by 147% vs increases of 68% among men, according to data from Strava Metro, a mobility tracking application used by 68 million people globally.

On Citi Bike, New York’s bike-share program, women now make up the greatest share of users since the program was introduced in 2013. According to research the main barrier that keeps women from cycling is the perilous feeling cyclists often have on city streets.
