Saanich in B.C. Launches New eBike Rebates to Help Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

October 18, 2021 - Residents of Saanich, B.C. can now access e-bike rebates via a new Community E-bike Incentive Pilot Program launched on Oct. 12 reports CBC.ca. The district is the first municipality in the province to offer such a program.

The new initiative offers a three-tier incentive program for new e-bike purchases including rebates of $350, $800 and $1,600, depending on the purchaser’s income level.

To qualify, the e-bike must be bought after Oct. 12, cost at least $1,800 and be used for personal, not commercial use.

“Saanich is committed to taking action against climate change,” said Colin Plant, a District Councillor, to CBC. A survey of residents by the Capital Regional District showed cost was the biggest barrier as prices for e-bikes start at around $1,600 with many retailing in the $3,000-$4,000 range.
