August 30, 2023 - (Saint-Jérôme, Que.) Active transportation and cycling tourism received another boost recently as the city of Saint-Jérôme, the Trans Canada Trail, and the Le P’tit Train du Nord Linear Park, unveiled 16 Velovoute secure parking / charging stations for bicycles and e-bikes at Place de la Gare, the start of the renowned cycling path.
Saint-Jérôme, just north of Montreal, marks the beginning of the world famous 234km P’tit Train du Nord bike path, built over an old railway line in the Laurentians, and the longest of its kind in Canada.
“This announcement is the first step in a major tourism strategy that will be rolled out over the coming months and years,” said Marc Bourcier, the Mayor of Saint-Jérôme.
“We are very pleased to have supported the installation of 16 charging and parking terminals for electric bicycles at Place de la Gare de Saint-Jérôme, where the P’tit Train du Nord km 0 is located,” commented Eleanor McMahon, President and CEO of Trans Canada Trail. “We salute the City of Saint-Jérôme for its visionary spirit and forward-thinking approach to sustainable transportation.”
The project was supported in part by a grant from Trans Canada Trail as part of the Destination Development component of its funding program.
“It is extraordinary to see the willingness of elected officials, municipalities and all partners to put in place concrete actions to improve active mobility,” added Marilyne Lortie, General Manager of Le P’tit Train du Nord Linear Park. “For users of our great green corridor that is Le P’tit Train du Nord, it’s great to now have the possibility of stopping in Saint-Jérôme, and leave their bikes in a safe place, with peace of mind to go visit, have a bite to eat and discover the local riches.”
The Velovoute system is the brainchild of Louis Fournier from Chicoutami, Que., and the company has made other inroads in Quebec via its sales division, COMP-X Canada Inc.
