May 29, 2021 - Bicycle sales in Spain are soaring with e-bikes showing the greatest increase up 48.9% with over 200,000 units sold, while urban models have surged 46.4%.
According to the study carried out by AMBE (Asociacion de Marcas y Bicicletas de España) and Cofidis, in 2020, more than 1.5 million bicycles were sold in Spain, an increase of 24.10% compared to 2019. Never before have so many bicycles been sold in the country in a single year.
The most popular bicycle model is still the mountain bike accounting for 75% of operations, although according to Cofidis financing, e-bikes now occupy second place, with 12% of the total financing, an increase of 50% over 2019.
Prior to Covid-19, a campaign called “Take care of yourself by bike, move by bike”, was launched by the Association of Brands and Bicycles of Spain.
AMBE also launched a campaign to address Covid-19 concerns by promoting and encouraging citizens to travel regularly by bicycle. “The health crisis has accelerated many processes and the bicycle sector has benefited from the great social demand to move, enjoy leisure and sports, in a healthier and more sustainable way,” commented Jesús Freire, Secretary General of AMBE.
