Test Report: Moustache Friday 27 FS 5 Full Suspension City eBike in a Class of its Own

by Barry Lyster

August 26, 2020 - For urban riders the Moustache Friday 27 FS 5 full suspension e-bike is ready to turn heads while delivering an amazing and comfortable ride in virtually any city around the globe.

You’ll love the upright positioning for traffic scanning while the plush suspension offers an unrivalled smooth ride with power to spare from the Bosch Performance Line CX e-drive system that features their most powerful motor on the market.

Being an e-bike only company with over 60 models, Moustache Bikes, has been engineering, designing, and testing their e-bike specific shocks for their line of eMTB’s at their home in Le Vogues, France. And their urban Friday 27 FS 5 embraces this technology with its Magic Grip Control 100 Air Shock.

The shock has a 2-position suspension level option with dynamic rebound control which is described as “a perfect harmony between suspension and motor.” Upfront, the Friday 27 FS 5 sports a Suntour Mobie 25 Coil front fork that has both pre-load and lockout functions. Together the rear shock and fork create the optimal balance between performance and comfort.

The 6061 T4-T6 alloy frame gracefully flows from the headtube to the rear hub with its slightly sloping top tube also providing some on-off bike ease. Cables and housing are integrated into the frame with the BoschPower Tube 500 Wh battery tucked away neatly in the downtube.

While not flashy, the glossy grey paint works nicely with the bike’s design and blends well into the urban landscape. There are not too many e-bikes like this on the market, and as they say “looks can be deceiving” because the Friday 27 FS 5 is an e-bike that packs a big punch.

The 250-watt Bosch Performance Line CX drive system delivers an ample 75 Nm of torque, more than enough to help get you off the line at a green light, or up and over any steep incline that comes your way. The large Bosch Intuvia center mount screen displays all the important ride information, with the 5-assist modes easily operated by the controller on the left side of the bars.

The upright fit is enhanced by Moustache’s ergonomic bars which seem to reach out to you, not the other way around. The Quick Park stem allows for a 90-degree turning of the bars making parking or storage in tight spaces easier, with a push of a button and the release of a lever.

Shimano’s SLX 11-speed drivetrain and MT200 hydraulic 180 mm disc brakes deliver top-shelf shifting with more than enough braking power to tame this robust e-bike. The Friday 27 FS 5 comes stock with fenders, lights, kickstand, bell and QL3 light lowerider rear rack. Moustache offers their own Ortlieb designed QL3 rear panniers made to fit their rear rack, although most other pannier bags will fit.

Bombing around town on this e-bike was a real pleasure. I ran the suspension on the plusher side having the luxury of the Bosch e-drive system, as the efficiency factor was not as applicable as with a traditional full-suspension bike. I was able to dial-in a buttery smooth ride and when in Sport or Turbo mode, the bike seemed to float over the ever-changing road surfaces. The Brooks C17 Cambium saddle adds a classy touch although it might take a few rides and maybe the use of a chamois to enjoy the real comfort it offers.

Front and rear lights, fenders, kickstand, bell and QL3 light lowerider rear rack are stock. @

The Friday 27 FS 5 handled a variety of conditions with ease and the 27.5 x 2.40 Schwalbe Super Moto X were a good choice for pavement and the occasional gravel path. The tires aided in cornering at speed as the Bosch motor’s 75 Nm of torque kept things up-right as it powered the bike out of each turn.

This unique and fun e-bike is truly in a class of its own. The Friday 27 FS 5 is more than just a head turner. It’s performance driven with the ability to function as a daily commuter or as a countryside explorer. So, at the end of the week when you show up at your post-work social on the Friday 27 FS 5, it won’t be because your sports car is in the shop!

The SRP is $6,699…for more information visit here.
