July 1, 2022 - The legendary Tour de France kicks off today in Copenhagen, Denmark, marking a historic first for the city that’s renowned as one of the world’s best cycling cities reports The Guardian.
The city’s first bike lane was built in 1908 and, “For us Copenhageners, cycling is a way of life,” remarked lord mayor of the city, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen.
The first test for the Tour’s pro cyclists, will take in the Little Mermaid statue, the best-known Copenhagen icon. Then there will be a cobbled section through the Amalienborg royal palace – yes, the Danish royals cycle and sometimes take the kids to school in a cargo bike.
