Types of eBikes

May 4, 2024 - E-bikes continue to boom in popularity as they remain the most attractive electric vehicle (EV) outselling electric cars worldwide. A myriad of offerings, for all segments of the cycling market, include road, MTB, urban and cargo. Cyclists of all stripes, including many new inductees, are joining the e-revolution.

eUrban
People are discovering that there is no better way to get around town than on a bicycle. Whether you’re a commuter or a recreational rider, need to run errands or take the kids to school, the e-urban option is for you. E-bikes are rapidly becoming a second vehicle for some, even replacing cars for others. From easy parking to infrastructure improvements to reducing greenhouse gases, you’ll find all kinds of options from step-through to e-cargo to fitness models. Many e-bikes include safety features such as front and rear lights, built-in locks, fenders and more, all while offering an amazing array of accessories.

eRoad
Current e-road models are much slicker, featuring innovative e-drive systems that include motors and batteries neatly concealed in hubs, bottom brackets and downtubes, making them almost indistinguishable from standard road bikes. Weights can now be around 10kg for top-end e-road bikes, as power-assist options are opening the door to new riders. Whether your surface is tarmac, gravel, or anything in between, you can now cover more terrain, creating new opportunities.

eMTB
The eMTB crowd is also gaining in popularity as e-drive systems, including both motors and batteries, become lighter yet more powerful. Exploring nature has never been easier — longer rides, epic climbs, amazing views, rocks, roots, and new challenges are all doable on an eMTB. Discover trails less travelled, connect with friends, and take on fun adventures like never before, as more and more venues are welcoming eMTB riders. These new opportunities, including eMTB racing, are door-openers for rookies and experienced riders alike.

eCargo
Given their ability to haul groceries, kids, medical supplies, building materials and much more, e-cargo bikes are growing in popularity among families and businesses. As motors and batteries become lighter and more powerful, e-cargo bikes are being touted as the first or second family vehicle. There are two major design types, the first being where the cargo box area is between the rider and the front wheel. The second e-cargo design features a longer, more robust rear rack where the cargo area is behind the rider. Variations and innovations to these designs include trikes, rear box and double box options. With congestion and parking as major issues in cities, larger companies are also exploring e-cargo vehicles.
