US Cycling Participation Up & eBikes at 30% of Market Share Say People for Bikes Reports

by Benjamin Sadavoy

April 24, 2025 - According to PeopleForBikes’ 2024 Impact Report, 35% of Americans ages 3 and up (112 million people) rode a bike at least once in 2024 which is up from 32% (98 million people) in 2018. Committed (104+ days) and moderate (25-103 days) riders have remained consistent at 3% and 9% respectively.

Youth ridership is showing promising growth seeing a substantial 9% increase in riders 3-9 years old in 2024 and an even more impressive 15% increase in riders 10-17 years old. This follows a troubling decline in the number of kids riding bikes, and the organization says it’s imperative to find ways to keep today’s youth riding into adulthood.

On the flip side only 28% of females vs 41% of American males rode at least once in 2024 demonstrating that more emphasis is needed to create safe infrastructure while breaking down barriers across the U.S. to encourage more women to ride.

A total of 1,905 bike projects have been tracked nation-wide through the Great Bike Infrastructure Project while $27.4 billion in local and state funding has been approved for safe, fun and connected places to ride.

In People for Bikes’ City Ratings program which ranks 2,300 U.S. cities, a total of 189 cities reached a city ranking of 50, which their research indicates is the tipping point to becoming a great cycling city.

Another remarkable statistic is that in 2024 over 4,000 miles of new electric mountain bike (eMTB) access was achieved.

eBikes Now at 30% of Market Share
The global popularity of e-bikes continues to propel the cycling market and bicycle sales revenues also show e-bikes now at around 30% of overall market share in the USA and a whopping 70% of Direct to Consumer (DTC) overall sales revenue which totalled $1.2 billion for 2024 (down from $1.28 billion in 2023).

According to People for Bikes research, around 450,000 DTC e-bike units were sold on brand websites in 2024 for $850 million, effectively doubling previously known U.S. e-bike sales. In addition, 98% of those e-bikes were throttle-driven.

For IBDs (Independent Bike Shops) and the ROM (Rest of Market) the data is compiled in conjunction with Circana, a data and technology provider, and total sales in 2024 were around $3.8 billion (down 9% from $4.2 billion in 2023), of which e-bikes represented almost $779 million, while all other bikes totalled $3.1 billion. The overall U.S. bicycle market is around $5.1 billion (down 9% from $5.49 billion in 2023) with e-bikes now at $1.63 billion representing around 30% of the market.

For 2024 total sales unit volumes show e-bikes at 920,000 units and all other bikes at 12.1 million units while total e-cargo bike sales reached almost $100 million in 2024 with 38,500 units sold.
