Webinar for World Bicycle Day 2022 on June 3 – How Will the Bicycle Shape our Future?

release by the European Cyclists' Federation

June 2, 2022 - On Friday 3 June, the European Cyclists’ Federation will host a free webinar featuring numerous cycling and sustainable mobility advocates from around the world to celebrate World Bicycle Day.

We have been celebrating this day every year since the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in 2018 to annually commemorate the bicycle.

But this year feels special.

Collectively, we have finally recognised that our reliance on fossil fuels has caused immense damage to our planet and climate. On top of this, Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine shows that this dependency can be very problematic for geopolitical and security reasons too.

Because transport – especially the over-reliance on motorised vehicles – makes up a significant share of our dependence on fossil fuels, governments and individuals across the globe are now increasingly looking to cycling as a solution. This is why World Bicycle Day 2022 feels even more momentous than previous years.

Don’t miss out on World Bicycle Day’s flagship event, where we will be showcasing strategies from around the world that are enabling the bicycle to make our cities, planet and future more liveable – register now!

This year’s speakers and panellists include:

  • Ángela María Orozco Gómez, Minister of Transportation for the Government of Colombia
  • Charlotte Nørlund-Matthiessen, Policy Adviser in the Cabinet of Commissioner Adina Vălean, European Commissioner of Transport
  • Amina Lanaya, Director General of Union Cycliste Internationale
  • Lucy Saunders, Director of Healthy Streets
  • Reetta Putkonen, Director of Urban Environment Division, City of Helsinki
  • Martin Blum, Cycling Coordinator, City of Vienna

  • Jill Warren, CEO of the European Cyclists’ Federation
