September 29, 2022 - Edmonton city councillors voted 4-0 in favour of a massive addition of 100 kilometers of bike lanes with funding of $170 million reports CTV.ca. The plan calls for more bike lanes along major commuter routes, as well as better connections in neighbourhoods.
The Alberta capital currently has about 15 kilometres of protected bike lanes primarily in the city centre. “You need that physical, separated, safe space in order to enable this transportation choice,” said Coun. Anne Stevenson.
She added that when people say that they don’t see cyclists it’s because the infrastructure isn’t there to support safe cycling. Coun. Michael Janz said voters made it clear in the last election that they want more bike lanes.
