October 18, 2026 - In mid-July, U.S. cycling advocacy organization PeopleForBikes launched the America Builds Bikes initiative, a new effort to support the bipartisan U.S. Bicycle Production and Assembly Act (H.R. 3904), introduced by Representatives Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and Mike Thompson (D-CA), both senior members of the House Ways and Means Committee and co-chairs of the Congressional Bicycle Caucus.

According to PeopleForBikes, the U.S. bicycle industry is ready to build more bikes in America. While current trade policy makes large-scale domestic production difficult, even for U.S. companies that want to invest at home, this legislation aims to change that.
The bill includes a 10-year duty-free import window that eliminates tariffs, with a goal of producing 2 million bicycles annually in the U.S. within five years and 5 million annually within 10 years.
In 1997, the U.S. accounted for 75% of the global bicycle market, but in 2026 it accounts for only 3%. According to Thompson, “Ninety-seven percent of bikes purchased in the United States are made elsewhere. It’s time we change that.”
Expanding domestic bicycle production in the U.S.A. will create jobs, strengthen local economies, and build a stronger U.S. bicycle industry.
