Mississauga Council Approves $27M of Road Redevelopment with Bike Lanes on Bloor St.

June 30, 2023 - Mississauga City Council has approved 4.6 kilometres of bike lanes as part of a major Bloor Street redesign that will make a local roadways safer, despite strong opposition from residents in the Applewood area reports Mississauga News.

The estimated cost of $27 million that follows a nearly two-and-a-half year consultation for the project, is part of a near total refurbishment of the road. In addition to the proposed bike lanes, plans for the project include new lighting, intersection improvements and MiWay stops from Etobicoke Creek to Central Parkway.

According to cycling advocate Robert Zaichkowski, the Mississauga approval still leaves, “…4 km to fill from Six Points to Etobicoke Creek.” Read his blog that outlines what to expect for this stretch, and to finish the job on Bloor St.

Cycling advocates are also eager to extend the Danforth bike lanes into Scarborough and along Kingston Road, and now feel there’s momentum with Toronto’s newly elected mayor, Olivia Chow, who is an avid cyclist and supporter of safer streets.
