City of Toronto Launches New Public Awareness Campaign to Keep Peace in Bike Lanes

August 15, 2025 - The City of Toronto is rolling out a new public awareness campaign to ease conflicts between cyclists, pedestrians and cars with lines like “You’ve got wheels, they’ve got heels,” and “If it takes gas, it moves too fast for the bike lane” reports CBC and other outlets.

The focus of the campaign is to help managing traffic in Toronto’s bike lanes, which in recent years have become populated with electric bikes and scooters alongside the typical bicycles.

According to Barbara Gray, the city’s general manager of transportation, the city is working with police on managing the micromobility devices. “Education is the first line of defense,” she said.

Along with bikes, the colourful advertisements that will go up around the city are clad with photos of e-bikes with and without pedals and food delivery bags. They remind people that cycling infrastructure isn’t a place to park, adults can’t ride vehicles on the sidewalk and bike lanes are one-way.

Some like Coun. Dianne Saxe, who represents the University-Rosedale ward that includes some of the city’s most popular bike lanes, say that public awareness is useful but some messaging could be stronger.
