August 5, 2026 - (Windsor, ON) Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island is celebrating a major milestone for active transportation and tourism with the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and the opening of the free multi-use path with the launch of our Cycle Tourism Map here.
The free map showcases six curated cycling routes across Windsor, Essex County and Pelee Island, connecting riders to waterfronts, wineries, historic communities, urban neighbourhoods, attractions, restaurants, accommodations, and natural areas throughout the region. The updated guide also highlights more than 125 Bike-Friendly Certified businesses, representing a 56% increase in certified businesses from the previous edition.

The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge Multi-Use Path creates an unprecedented opportunity for cross-border leisure cycling, connecting Windsor Essex directly to Detroit’s growing trail network and active transportation infrastructure. The new map features cross-border route options and highlights connections with regional cycling partners, including integration with Ride with GPS, allowing visitors to access tracked routes and navigation tools while exploring the destination.

Cycle tourism continues to grow across Ontario as travellers seek immersive outdoor experiences that connect them with local communities. The updated Cycle Tourism Map was developed to help both residents and visitors discover the region by bike, while supporting local businesses that cater to cycling enthusiasts.
Businesses featured on the map have achieved Ontario By Bike certification, a program that’s operated by Ontario by Bike that recognizes tourism-related businesses that provide essential amenities and services for cyclists. Certified businesses offer features such as secure bike parking, access to water, repair tools, route information, and welcoming staff trained to assist cycling visitors.
“The growth in our Bike-Friendly Certified businesses demonstrates the tourism industry’s commitment to welcoming cycling visitors and recognizing the economic impact they bring to our communities,” said Gordon Orr. “A 56% increase in certified businesses shows that operators across Windsor Essex see the value in cycle tourism and are investing in creating exceptional experiences for riders exploring our region.”
The map includes routes designed for a variety of cycling abilities and interests, from leisurely waterfront rides and winery tours to longer-distance regional adventures. Users can also access digital route information and GPS tracking through Ride with GPS integration, making it easier than ever to plan and navigate cycling experiences throughout Windsor, Essex County and Pelee Island.

The Cycle Tourism Map and related cycle tourism initiatives were developed through funding support from the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan and the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), in addition to tourism and municipal partners committed to advancing active transportation, sustainable tourism, and cross-border visitor experiences.
